The 2016 Internet Trends Report Quantifies Our IoT Knowledge

By Megan Bozman

Mary Meeker, a partner at venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield, and Byers, delivered her 2016 Internet Trends Report on Wednesday at the Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. A video is available below, although for some reason, Ms. Meeker was given 24 minutes to discuss 213 slides worth of insightful, detailed data. Although she did an admirable job tackling this insurmountable challenge, Ms. Meeker did not discuss the “Data as a Platform” portion of her report.

Key takeaways include:

  • Global Internet users have surpassed 3B; India has supplanted the US as the world’s second-largest Internet market.

  • Internet user growth remains consistent (led by acceleration in India), while smartphone user and shipment growth have slowed.

  • As data explodes, data security concerns explode.

Data in the digital universe has risen to nearly 10B Petabytes of data, while data storage costs continue to fall. Data ‘generators’ of all types continue to rise, from cars to video games and wearables.

The next big wave of global internet growth includes leveraging the current unlimited connectivity and storage to collect, aggregate, correlate, and interpret all of this data to improve people’s lives and enable enterprises to operate more efficiently.

The third wave in the evolution of the data platform moves beyond big data to’ big and fast,’ and includes data integrated into everything. This wave of mass data intelligence is categorized by pervasive systems, big and fast storage, and data instruments for business.

Ms. Meeker’s presentation includes a few companies utilizing analytics to improve business efficiency, including Looker, SalesforceIQ, and Ionic Security. I think Senseware can be considered part of that exalted group. Bringing analytics and connectivity to building maintenance can reduce both labor and consumption costs, and enable proactive maintenance. Sensors that can collect and aggregate data have great potential for a variety of uses, but must be applied strategically and backed by smart analytics.

Increasing efficiency in order to reduce costs of existing buildings is all that much more critical in light of Ms. Meeker’s discussion of risks in 2016. “Slower growth, higher debt, and the aging population create rising risks for all of us. But there are opportunities for businesses that can innovate, increase efficiency, lower prices, and create jobs. The internet can be at the core of this.”

Well said. And Senseware is well positioned at the core of smart building solutions to increase efficiency.
